Tata Nano - The Cheapest Car
India’s Tata Motors recently unveiled the Nano, its much-anticipated $2500 car. Yes, the car costs only $2500. The aim is to enable those in developing countries to move to four wheels. The price tag is impressive but what will happen to the environment if everyone will own a car?

Do you think they can keep the Tata Nano so cheap because of sponsoring by Pepsi? ;) All kidding aside... I share the environmental concerns expressed in the clip. Cheap is great, but do they also take into account the durability factor? Is the care easily 're'- or upcycled? The mileage appears okay (21km/l or 50 miles/gallon), but why not go for a hybrid or altenative fuel car? I think they are creating more problems then they are solving?

I had long hoped that "developing countries" would be able to hurdle the four wheel problem in much the same manner that they hurdled hard wired technology through the use of cellphones. Apparently and unfortunately, this is not to be. I'm quite sorry to see that they have indeed fallen into the trap, that they will not simply go straight to better public transport, will not go more directly to alternative sorts of vehicles. How much better this city car would be if it were powered by an efficient battery and got it's electricity from a wind farm or the sun. We in the West can't even manage that ourselves.

@Sammy: When developments like these take place I am always curious if the people that take decisions like these are aware of what they are doing. It's for us to make them aware of what they are doing. If everyone would be aware of what his or her actions would do to others then they would make different choices. I'm sure.
