Michelin’s Revolutionary Airless Tires

Michelin’s Revolutionary Airless Tires

Michelin shows a potentially disruptive technology which could be the future new standard for vehicles: an airless, integrated tire and wheel combination. It’s called the Tweel (Tire/WhEEL).

I'm using the latest version of Linux's Flash player (7.0.63.0) yet it asks me to upgrade... There is *no* newer version, can I get around this nonsense?

Just random points/food for thought...

Based on what I saw in the video it looks like it would be easier to compromise the integrity of the tire with out the owner knowing. How about making small cuts throughout the honeycomb? Or how about taking a lighter to the structure? Or using one of those compressed cans of air to increase the brittleness? How about a pissed off spouse, colleague, neighbor?

What impact would this have on the the long term cost for the owner? Wear ability?

What about profits for the tire/rubber/tow truck business?

How would they fare in freezing weather?

What about load baring capacity in relation to a standard tire? Want to carry more on a traditional tire, simply add more air (to a point of course). Want more traction on (surface area), release air.

Would it greatly reduce the shipping cost associated with moving the tires? Good for tire companies, not so good for freighters?

Isn't this similar to the tires they are running in F! now? This has been done on spare tires before, and was approved. GM used spare tires in the late 80's that had a similar design.

Way to use Flash for no good reason.

bgates - you mean downgrade, right?

These tires are not usable.
Too loud.
Maybe in a decade with millions of research and development.
Millions we are going to pay...

Just think of the possibilities! The police will NEVER deflate your tires with road spikes again!

I saw this article about a year ago, and similar comments were made. I, personally, think it'll never hit the market just because you can't hurt them with spikes.

HAH! i knew about the tweel over 2 years ago. At my university, Louisiana Tech, we worked with Michelin in a research environment to develop the product. Pretty funny it's news to everyone... but me.

Posted by: Maxo66 on 15 May 2006 | 04:32 am

tech fan,
pretty funny you have no friends but that news to everyone but you.

Posted by: John-n37 on 15 May 2006 | 04:46 am

This made the news more than 2 years ago. Seen it before.

TheMJ + Anon:
You can run flash 8 if you want to...

So far, I've got it running on crossover office, but I'm going to find a way to set it up through wine soon...

Its actualy quite fast + reliable too. Surprising.

Just install flash for FF/Netscape on crossover office, and make sure the plugins are set up right in crossover office's settings.

My girlfriends father and a group of other guys in South Africa gave an old man alot of money... He claimes that he is working on an airliss tire that the world would buy for billions. This is going on from 2002 and no money is being paid since, can this be? Theres also proof that it is registered, sombody must know somthing?

Are you sure that your girlfriends dad was not ripped off.

Posted by: mike on 23 Feb 2007 | 04:57 am

Posted by: your daddy on 20 May 2007 | 06:19 am

It would get mucky really quickly and look a mess.

Youths would take to ramming empty alcopops bottles in the gaps and then laugh as they smashed when you drove off.
